Description
Help us Celebrate 40 Years in the Chilliwack Community!
The Ann Davis Society was founded after a few concerned women got together and created the Emergency Shelter Committee.
In 1981, the Emergency Shelter Committee became incorporated as the Upper Fraser Valley Transition Society, (UFVTS) a non-profit society. Thanks to a Ministry of Human Resources grant, the society was able to hire three staff members.
It was now time to find a name for the house that would provide shelter for so many women and children. Jean Scott, a fairly new member of the UFVTS, did some research and discovered that a local woman named Ann Davis had helped provide shelter for battered women and their children since her arrival in Chilliwack in the 1920’s. Jean found out Ann Davis was still alive, living in a Chilliwack nursing home. She visited her several times and heard many stories of how she had helped people in Chilliwack.
Our mission is:
“Ann Davis Transition Society provides education, prevention and support services to those affected by abuse or violence.” The vision of ADTS is "Communities free from abuse and violence." Initially ADTS was opened to offer shelter and support to women and their children who were leaving abusive situations.
The society has grown holistically over the past 40 years to provide an innovative array of services to meet the needs of the community, which include: the Transition House for women and children fleeing abusive and violent situations; a specialized Transition House with 22 beds for single women; women's, men's, children's, youth, couples and family counselling; legal advocacy, family time supervised visits and various groups for men and women, youth and children. We are also the founders of Fraser Valley Marches for Women.
These key activities of Ann Davis Transition Society all work towards the focus of the organization, which is to promote an abuse and violence free community, and are seen as an integral part of effective service to the community. We value diversity and inclusiveness and see clients that no one else will see. We have a diverse and welcoming team of professionals numbering over 50 that are compassionate and responsive to our client needs.
To celebrate we are holding a 40th Anniversary Conference and Fundraiser at GW Graham School. The day will be a family friendly event with involvement from many local businesses, corporate sponsors and speakers from the community and UFV.
