A little more on our panelists:
Moderator - Sandra Bonner-Pederson
I am Sandra Bonner-Pederson and my traditional name is Í:lhot. I am a member of the Tzeachten First Nation and a proud Owner/Operator of Bear Image Productions (BIP) (http://www.bearimage.ca). I have been in business for over 20 years and my company is located right at Tzeachten.
I chose my field of work in video production back in 1989, when I was asked to volunteer host a production entitled Rebirth of a Nation, which documented Indigenous stories in the Fraser Valley. I became interested in working behind the camera, and subsequently enrolled in BCIT’s two year Television Broadcast Diploma Program, graduating at the top of my class in 1994 and I have been working in the industry ever since.
Early in my career, I worked for ITV, now Global TV in Edmonton as a Writer/Producer promoting some news stories. The despondent character of news production lead me to seek new opportunities within the organization, I found my fit in promotions as a Writer/Producer for Family Channel. These experiences lead to a wealth of transferrable skills in writing for productions and led to BIP’s adept ability to highlight Indigenous and Non-Indigenous stories.
Being a small company, operated primarily by myself, allows for the development of a more personal and personable relationship between BIP, its clients, and the youth I mentor in all aspects of media production. Being a lean company also allows youth mentees the opportunity to receive hands-on training from myself and my other full time staff member. The youth are given the opportunity to work and learn the various aspects in productions, such as set design, camera operation, lighting and audio, producing and directing, post production editing, graphic design, etc. With a little influence from me, a few of these youth have gone on to further themselves in the video production industry by attending BCIT’s Television Broadcast Program. I believe that this role model position allows youth to learn firsthand from an Indigenous businesswoman.
BIP continues to work as a medium for Indigenous cultural preservation, and works closely with Indigenous communities throughout the Fraser Valley to preserve their history.
Chief Derek Epp
Ey Swayel, my Xwelmexw (traditional) name is Weli’leq, my given name is Derek Epp. I am the Chief of Tzeachten First Nation which is a part of the Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe and the Stó:lō Nation. My parents are Bruce and Sheree Epp; my Grandparents are Georgina Pall and the late Lorne Robinson; my great grandparents are the late Duncan and Dorothy Wealick. I am a proud descendent of the Wealick family and honoured to walk with the Xwelmexw name Weli’leq while serving Tzeachten First Nation. I have been the elected Chief of Tzeachten First Nation for six years and brought my experience in Social Work into this role.
Since serving Tzeachten as Chief I have embarked on my next step in my education journey which is focused on business and administration. I have completed the Aboriginal Management Program at the University of British Columbia along with the Certified Aboriginal Professional Administrators program through the Aboriginal Financial Officers Association with the eventual goal of completing a Masters in Business Administration. While serving as Chief of Tzeachten I have been able to expand my knowledge of economic development by involving myself in various Boards within Chilliwack, the province and nationally. These include but aren’t limited to:
I am an advocate for all forms of economic development, which includes taxation, as I see this as the path forward for our communities, tribes, and nations to achieve the goal of financial independence.
